Yamaha MT120

I found this multitrack cassette recorder on Facebook Marketplace. The seller knew that it turned on but hadn’t used it in it in years. When I got it home and tested it out, the take up reel wouldn’t turn and the tape would spill out of the cassette into the machine. I assumed it would just be a matter of replacing a belt but when I opened it up I found that they were actually in great condition. After a closer look around I found a small cracked plastic piece that was loose behind the cassette deck along with a spring. I was able to repair the crack in the plastic bit with a drop of super glue and then referencing a copy of the manual online I located the gear where the piece and spring were supposed to be positioned. With the piece now firmly in place, it pushes the spring against a gear which then engages with the take up reel and allows it to spin properly.
